Henry Yelin Guest Essay

When you receive your ballot in advisery tomorrow morning, the only question running through your head should be “Who do I vote for?” And the only answer to that question is John Secaras. I am writing neither on behalf of John, nor in favor any particular candidate, but solely to express my personal views as to who is most fitting to be the Class of 2010 President.

In comparison to the four other legitimate candidates, (Shao, Server, Holden, and Max Rice) John Secaras has the appropriate mix of humor, professionalism, dependability and expressiveness. As a member of Student Senate for every year possible, John has the experience necessary to get stuff done in Senate. This ability, however, has not influenced John to expect massive change to occur. His attainable and rewarding goals as president make him a worthwhile choice.

Additionally, John’s success in public speaking will make for a superb commencement speech, without immature references to the Jonas Brothers. Speaking before grandparents, infants, parents, and siblings it is necessary that humor is not the driving force within the speech. Consider which you will remember best: a funny speech in which you simply laugh, or a speech that leaves you with lasting inspiration and ambition?

The answer is clear: John Secaras for Senior Class President for the Class of 2010.

great post I just have a few complaints.

A. Horrible hook, did you steal it from a third graders first persuasive essay.

B. You left out all the girl candidates which have a huge shot of winning granted the guy vote will be split.

C. Although im not sure if I will vote for Max Rice, right now im leaning Server, this post seems to be an obvious rant against him.

d. Are you seriously saying that the commencement speaker should cater his speech to the grandparents and infants in the audience? I think your forgetting the fact that the class president is supposed to represent us, not our parents and little sisters. And no I can not remember a single time where a high school graduation speech has left me with anything other than utter boredom, let alone lasting inspiration and ambition. I for one want to laugh my ass off at 5 hour long graduation. Max Rice undoubtly will give the most entertaining, and surprisingly, as Hermanson pointed out, meanigful speech at graduation. But unlike you I dont think the main duty of the president will be to make one speech at graduation and while server hasnt given us many unneeded pleasures, the amount of humanatarian work done under is tenure is overwelming. Server is definately the best ecgc canidate out there.

I'd just like to post a few of my thoughts.

While I am slightly disappointed Henry didn't write his recommendation for me, I commend the fairness with which he handled what he wanted to say. I also appreciate the fact that he is directly getting involved with a school democracy.

I am not going to post here all the reasons I should be elected President. This is Henry's post, so I feel I should respond to what he wrote as well as Tbags' comments.

For one reason or another, a fever over who will be giving our graduation speech swept across our class. I'm not exactly sure why - compared to the President's other responsibilities, giving a graduation speech is fairly unimportant, just memorable. In fact, the Senior Adviser Chairs strongly recommended I remove the portion of my speech explaining why I am best suited to give the graduation speech. It doesn't deserve the focus. So, I guess agree with you on that, Tbags. ECGC is far more important.

Yes, Henry did use a fairly run-of-the mill hook. However, as the person who sits next to him in AP English, I know he can create some excellent writing. If today's speeches are any indication, fancy language style and wording is not what appeals to the majority of New Trier students.

Henry left out the girl candidates because he didn't feel they were as "legitimate." Fine. That's just his view. Others might only want a girl to win; some might want a mix.

If I were out of the picture Tbags, which apparently I am as far as your post goes, I would recommend you vote for Server over Rice. I am good friends with Max, but I want a real leader. That's why I am running. Server has leadership experience much like I do, only he’s been President before, and I have some different extracurricular leadership roles than he does. Last I checked, Max didn’t really mention his leadership capabilities in his speech. He’s a very funny person and would give a hilarious speech, but I do not find that he is qualified enough for such a serious job.

Lastly, any speaker must cater to his audience. His whole audience. Yes, the Class President is literally the President of our class, but keep in mind that he or she is giving a speech in memory of four important years at NT. Family members will have high expectations. The grandparents aren’t there for comedy hour, nor some droning coming from center stage. While students may want funny and entertaining, family will want inspiring and respectful. In effect, kids should want their families to enjoy the speech, since without their families, they wouldn’t even go to our wonderful high school.
